Guide to Eldercare Options

Senior Home Care and Other Senior Care Services

Home Care

Home care for elders compliments both the senior and caregiver. It allows for the senior to live in the comfort of their own home and gives the caretaker the reassurance that their parent is being taken cared of, while still being able to do their daily activities as they please.

Home Health Care

Home health care is much like home care except that if a senior has a health condition and is in need of assistance, a professional is there to assist with that. Whether it is taking medications everyday or using a home medical monitoring system to ensure the senior is safe, home health care is a great nursing home care alternative.

Adult Day Care

Adult day care provides seniors with a safe environment during the day where the senior can enjoy the company of other seniors and can participate in daily activities, social events, nutritional nursing, senior exercise programs and other services for seniors to enjoy.

Independent Living

Many seniors enjoy the privacy that they get in their own homes and would rather live alone. Independent living facilities are ideal for seniors that do not require personal or medical care but would rather live somewhere knowing there is help if needed. Independent living facilities usually come equipped with safety features that enable seniors to get around easily. It also offers seniors the ability to socialize with others if they choose or have their privacy. Some independent living facilities offer activities for senior amusement such as day field trips or shopping trips. Meals are often included however the independent living apartments are usually equipped with their own kitchen for the senior to cook their own meals if they please.

Assisted Living

Assisted living is much like independent living yet assisted living facilities offer trained professionals in a homelike atmosphere where seniors don't require 24-hour assistance. The trained professionals help seniors with their daily activities that they can no longer do alone. Onsite and offsite activities are usually arranged in assisted living facilities for the senior if they wish to participate.

Nursing Homes

Nursing homes offer 24-hour care for seniors that can no longer live on their own. Medical professionals and nurses are supplied with equipment to help care for the seniors illness or injury. Nursing home care includes helping seniors get in and out of bed, dressing, laundry, daily meal plans, medical services and other housekeeping tasks so the senior can live comfortably. Nursing homes should have a doctor available 24/7 yet it's often recommended that their own physician treat the senior. Grooming services are usually available, daily activities, social services, physical therapy and religious services are a few of the features of nursing home care.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities

Continuing care retirement communities are a combination of different living choices including assisted living facilities, private homes, independent living facilities, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. Continuing care retirement communities offer seniors the type of housing they need and desire. There is a financial commitment that comes with these types of communities including rent, meals, services, medical care, and/or amenities. Often times with these communities' seniors have to meet certain criteria including age, income, financial assets and health status.

Alzheimer's Care

Alzheimer facilities are available for those that suffer from Alzheimer's and dementia to ensure they are getting the medical attention needed. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities often offer these programs.

Active Adult Communities

Active adult communities are rental communities where seniors must be 55 years of age (sometimes 62 years) to live. Active senior communities are specifically made for adults who enjoy a maintenance-free lifestyle. A benefit of active adult communities is that there are social and recreational activities for active seniors to enjoy with other adults sharing the same interest.
